- What are Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors courses?
UC Irvine’s online AP and Honors courses are approved by the University of California as meeting the a-g requirements for admission to the University of California. The AP and Honors curriculum has a proven track record of preparing students for success on the AP exams as well as helping students become eligible for admission to four-year colleges and universities.
- What are instructor-led AP courses?
UC Irvine’s online AP courses are instructor-led, meaning that an instructor will lead the student throughout the entire course.
This is not a self-study model.
Our course content was originally developed by the University of California UC College Prep Online (UCCP). Each course has been faculty-developed and is designed to engage students utilizing multi-media including video, flash presentations, games, voiced narrative, photos and text. - Are textbooks required?
Textbooks are required for UC Irvine’s AP and Honors online courses. Once a student enrolls in a course and pays the fees, textbook information will be included on the enrollment confirmation form.
Students are urged to order textbooks immediately after enrolling in a course to ensure that they arrive in time for the first day of class. - What are the technical requirements for an online course?
For a complete list, please read our Technical Requirements. - How will my progress be monitored?
Our online AP instructors will create weekly graded activities for students, host at least one online discussion forum per week, grade, evaluate, and provide students with feedback on assignments within 48 hours of submission.
In addition, our instructors will provide a notice of the student’s activity and performance weekly to the student, parent, high school principal, or other legally authorized guardian or responsible party. - How is my parent involved in my coursework?
In the absence of a high school appointed “Monitor”, a student can have their parent or guardian serve as the monitor facilitating the student’s progress through the course. Parents are expected to help “keep you on track” by encouraging you to maintain e-mail contact with your instructor, complete and submit assignments on time, and actively participate in course forums. Parents can remind you of examination dates and help you arrange for a proctor for your final examinations. UC Irvine nevertheless expects that all academic work be solely your own. - How are exams given?
Quizzes and exams will be scheduled by the instructor. Students will access the quizzes and exams from the online course, or the instructor will release a quiz or exam via e-mail. The instructor will be required to grade the quiz or exam and post a grade for the student within 48 hours of completion.
The final examination will be the only proctored exam. Students are required to find a proctor to administer the final examination. Proctors must be representatives from an educational institution including a high school, community college, university, learning center like Sylvan Learning Center, or a public library. Students must have their selected proctor approved by UC Irvine Extension. Contact Erica Offutt at (949) 824-7945 or unex-educate@uci.edu.
The Proctor Identification Form (to be completed by the student) must be completed and returned to UC Irvine Extension prior to taking the final examination. These forms should be returned to Erica Offutt at unex-educate@uci.edu or to UC Irvine Extension, P.O. Box 6050, Irvine, CA 92616-6050, ATTN: Erica Offutt.
The following materials have been developed for students and proctors to assist in the final examination: Student instructions for final examination. - How do I enroll?
